The goal of the Occupational Therapy Assisting Program is to provide meaningful and appropriate educational experiences that enable students to develop knowledge and achieve competency in entry-level skills. The program leads to certification as an occupational therapy assistant (COTA). Accreditation and CertificationThe program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). Graduates are able to sit for the National Certification Examination to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). A felony conviction may affect a grduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure. InternshipsAll practitioners must complete supervised clinical internships in a variety of health and human service settings. Some of the sites where Briarwood students have interned are: - Gaylord Hospital, Wallingford, CT

Student ClubThe Student Occupational Therapy Assistant Club (SOTA) strives to increase awareness in the community related to healthcare and occupational therapy services. The club also holds several fundraising events each year to support charitable organizations.

 According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Occupational Therapy Assistants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations, meaning that employment through 2010 is expected to increase by 36% or more. This growth is based on several factors, including the needs of the aging baby boom population, increasing awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and special education service implementation in the public schools.
